Safety During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Amidst the pandemic, plans can change very quickly as we are updated on the global, national, and local situations.
As of April, we are planning to host all three weeks of Old Tyme School.
We're travelling back in time to the 1920's with Old Tyme stile education, costumes, lunches, songs, and activities,
but we maintain the sanitation of 2021. This means even Old Tyme Country School entails clean surfaces, clean bathrooms,
safe drinking water, lots of soap with hot water and hand sanitizer, masks, and space to exercise reasonable social distancing.
We still require that students arrive each day with masks and we will do our best to ensure they are worn consistently.
We also implore any students feeling unwell not to attend Old Tyme School that day. Should there be a COVID-19 vaccine approved
for children in the OTCS age range by this time that is available to families planning to attend Old Tyme School, it is not required
but greatly encouraged for students to be vaccinated before attending.
Safety is crucial, and the wellbeing of students is our top priority. Should there be any changes or cancellations regarding
Old Tyme Country School, KHC will issue public announcements and contact students' parents/guardians regarding the adjustments.
Full refunds can be made if necessary.

The Kanabec History Center presents: Old Tyme Country School
This year, OTCS will be held in three week-long sessions.
Week 1: July 19 - July 23
Week 2: July 26 - July 30
Week 3: August 2 - August 6
Classes last from 9:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M
Old Tyme Country School is an opportunity for kids to learn about what life was like in the early 1900's by experiencing a week of school set one hundred years ago. Class sessions begin at 9:00am and conclude at 2:00pm every day on the property of the Kanabec History Center. Class is held in one of our historic schoolhouses, Whittier School, and taught by Rachel Schmeltzer (see more about Rachel below!). Students participate in a variety of activities, from arithmetic and writing with a quill (for the older kids), to playing games outside, to churning their own butter, to learning schoolhouse songs.
Additionally, OTCS invites parents and friends to join the students on Friday of each week at 1:00pm for a small performance by the students in front of Whitter School, and an Ice Cream Social after, which takes place in the banquet room of KHC. Students are encouraged to bring a treat to share, while KHC will provide ice cream and beverages.

Old Tyme County School Teacher 2021
Please give our returning Old Tyme Country School teacher a warm welcome!
Rachel Schmeltzer is a Paraprofessional and Substitute Teacher for the Mora School District. She grew up in northern Minnesota where her family lived in a wood house built by her parents. Having spent several of her early years without running water and wood heat, in some ways she feels she has experienced a taste of life in the early 1900’s.
Rachel currently lives in the Mora area, appreciating the conveniences of modern living. Her interests include continuing education, philosophy, and history. She greatly enjoys her time in the classroom, having a natural love of learning and working with children. Her hobbies include baking, writing, traveling, and spending time with her two young boys, Randy and Damian.
