WHAT IS THE "TAX LEVY" ABOUT/FOR?
On the November 3rd, 2020 presidential ballot, KHC had a question for the community of Kanabec County to vote on. This question asked if we can collect property taxes from residents of Kanabec County, which will fund the Kanabec History Center. The levy did not pass in 2020, however, we are pursuing an attempt to have our tax levy question on the November 2022 ballot.
This funding is CRITICAL to the survival of KHC! We are looking at simply the bare minimum to keep our doors open. This would raise taxes by varying amounts per property, but would be less than $5 for nearly every individual property in Kanabec County. Overall, it would bring in about $30k, just enough for KHC to remain open and provide our crucial community services of collecting and protecting Kanabec County history.
With the support this community has shown and the results of the 2020 vote compared to where we were able to do the most advertising, KHC believes that if we can spread the word and rally support, our 2022 vote will pass and the History Center can remain open for generations to come! To have that chance, though, we'll need to have operating funds well into 2023. This is why donations and volunteers are more crucial than ever!

WHAT EXHIBITS/ARTIFACTS DOES KHC PUT ON DISPLAY?
Kanabec History Center collects almost everything we can that has specific relevancy to Kanabec County. Family and business records, photographs, maps, charts, books, objects, and more that are tied directly to Kanabec County are welcome at KHC! Because we are pressed for space, some bigger items or items less relevant to the county as a whole will unfortunately not find a home at the History Center.
Due to limited display space, you will only find exhibits at KHC which meet at least two of the following criteria: 1. The exhibit/accessions have many like items, 2. The exhibit/accessions are extremely relevant and crucial to Kanabec County History, 3. The exhibit/accessions are interactive, 4. The exhibit/accessions draw attention and interest from the widest and most diverse possible demographic of Kanabec County residents and visitors.
Currently, KHC has six indoor exhibits:
