Whittier School, former District 41
Originally located three miles Southeast of Mora on County Road 11, the Whittier School was moved to the Kanabec County Fairgrounds, South Union Street in Mora, in 1964.
In 1976, the Bicentennial Committee agreed to restore the structure to its former status. Community volunteers cleaned and painted, and obtained appropriate interior furnishings. In October, 1987, the Kanabec County Historical Society accepted responsibility for the preservation of the school. The building was used by the Society for occasional exhibitions and promotions during the Kanabec County Fairs. By 1986, the building had badly deteriorated due to the lack of maintenance funds and vandalism. In 1987, the Society’s Board of Directors actively sought financial contributions to save the Whittier School. With these dedicated funds, the school was moved to the Kanabec History Center grounds in the fall of that year and placed on a permanent foundation. Whittier School now houses the Old Tyme County School each summer. |
