What do volunteers do?
Anything and everything! There are many different tasks and focuses volunteers could offer to do or be assigned:
We'd love to find a place and use for any of your skills, cater to your interests, or learn new ways for you to volunteer!
- Help out in the office
- (This could entail everything from helping with research, regular office operations, special projects, or even running errands!)
- Fundraise
- Form or join an event-planning committee with other volunteers or Board Members
- Form or join a project committee for creative and alternative methods of increasing funding and/or community involvement
- Dedicate your own time in events, missions, and/or every day life to spreading information about KHC and fostering community support
- Use and forge personal connections (especially those with businesses) to establish ties on behalf of KHC
- Gather some friends and coordinate with KHC Staff to host a Membership Drive or Donation Drive
- Advertise around town
- Solicit donations
- Operate informational/advertising booths at different events and businesses around Kanabec County
- Join the Board of Directors
- Yardwork and maintenance
- Building upkeep and sanitation (custodial work)
- And more!
We'd love to find a place and use for any of your skills, cater to your interests, or learn new ways for you to volunteer!
What are the requirements to volunteer?
KHC accepts volunteers of all ages, with all skillsets, physical/mental abilities, and education levels. Some volunteers may be temporarily turned down or offered tasks that are different from what they originally had in mind due to the current needs of KHC, but all will always be welcomed back, and we love to collect names and numbers of potential volunteers and their specific interests/skills to call on when needs arise!
If you're wondering if you'd be a good fit for KHC/if KHC would be a good fit for you, or if KHC currently needs your special skills or efforts, please give us a call (320-679-1665) or email us at [email protected]! We'd love to speak with you and give you more details on what we're looking for now and what other volunteer opportunities might arise in the future!
Kanabec History Center does not have non-negotiable requirements for volunteers other than the following:
We appreciate your understanding and compliance with these terms.

Kanabec History Center does not have non-negotiable requirements for volunteers other than the following:
- Violence, racism and xenophobia, sexism and misogyny, homophobia and transphobia, religious prejudice such as islamophobia or anti-Semitism, ableism, ageism, and other forms of bigotry or hostility for others are not tolerated. Volunteers are required to treat all other volunteers, Staff, Board Members, KHC patrons/customers, and guests on the KHC campus with respect. Any volunteers expressing hostility, hostile beliefs, or threats against the physical or mental safety of any persons or people through words or actions will be immediately turned down or relieved of duty, and requested to leave and not return to the KHC campus. No exceptions will be made.
- Volunteers must be physically and mentally old enough to be left alone without adult/caretaker supervision, complete responsibilities, and have social interactions with strangers.
- We are willing to accommodate volunteers with any social/communications disorders/anxiety at events and some special projects, but because volunteers will have to interact with at minimum two KHC Staff members they may not know, we request that volunteers are comfortable with meeting, speaking with, being alone with, and working with people they do not know.
- We understand and even expect that volunteers may have some or many questions or need help with tasks. We only ask that volunteers who need parents/guardians/volunteers/staff to supervise them wait until they are older or come with another designated volunteer/guardian who can help them.
- Volunteers who actively sabotage or otherwise intentionally disrupt the operations of Kanabec History Center--including inhibiting other volunteers/Staff, damaging or threatening to damage KHC property, or damaging or threatening to damage KHC's reputation via the spread or threat of spreading rumors, false information, false accusations, or other slander or libel--will not be tolerated and will be immediately turned away or relieved of duty, and requested to leave the KHC campus. No exceptions will be made.
- We understand that accidents happen and mistakes may be made. However, blatant and/or repeated offenders will be relieved of their duties and asked to leave.
We appreciate your understanding and compliance with these terms.
When would i volunteer? how often would I volunteer?
As for when:
For volunteers helping out in the office or doing yardwork or maintenance, you could schedule with us to come in any time 10:00am-4:30pm, any day Tuesday-Friday! For volunteers helping out with events, you could schedule shifts within the time frame and date of the event (such as set up, clean up, morning shift, a midday four hour block, etc.) or stay for the entire time--you'd only need to coordinate with staff to make sure the date, time, and duties are clear! For volunteers helping out with other work, such as community involvement or participating in committees, you can work independently on your own time or coordinate to schedule meetings with staff or your group on dates and times that work best for you!
As for how often:
However often you like! You can volunteer at one event, one time only, for a handful of hours, or you could schedule to come work in the office at the same day and time every week. If you want to cover a specific aspect of KHC duties--such as mowing the lawn or shoveling and salting the snowy sidewalk, or filing our weekly newspaper records, or participating on a fundraising committee/work on donation drives--you can schedule to stop by whenever those duties need attention or whenever planning meetings are needed, however often or rarely that may be.
All you have to do is contact (phone: 320-679-1665, email: [email protected]) and coordinate with KHC staff and we will do our best to be as accommodating as possible to your schedule, skills, and/or needs!
